Oklahoma City Thunder’s New Indigenous-Inspired Uniforms

With the NBA set to debut new City Edition jerseys for the 2018-2019 season, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s new uniforms feature an indigenous-inspired design developed under the hat of Nike.

The jersey’s most dominant turquoise color represents the 11th anniversary stone and the indigenous color of friendship. Coinciding, it is also the Thunder’s 11th NBA season. The lettering of “OKC” takes center in the jersey’s chest, shaped into one another to create a unified shape. The belt pattern on the shorts represent the various individual indigenous communities expanding outward and is derived from traditional sash. Inspired by the turtle shell, the short vent graphic symbolizes the Earth and acknowledges the tribes that line the outside. In addition, the elements of the primary stripe point east to welcome the rising sun and guide the way.

The Thunder first sport their new City Edition jerseys against the New York Knicks on November 14th. Nike graphic designer Carson Brown, who worked on the uniform talks about it’s indigi-spired creation in the video below:

  1. Greetings Adrian,
Thanks for shairing the OKC jersey article. Most people do not know that the state of Oklahoma was going to be designated for Blacks and Indigenous (Indian term back in the day) people. Can you also have your articles posted on the 1065elmnt IG. You need more content! Not all the articles but something like the OKC article would be great due the the NBA’s popularity. The design is DIVINE!

Loving the new station in The6ix!

    Bless,

  2. Hey Greg,

Glad you enjoyed the read! I did hear snippets of info that that was the original intent for Oklahoma. Cool for you to confirm that. I’ll definitely be looking into how we could feature certain blog posts for content on our IG page. It’s a great idea considering it’s popularity.

I look forward to hearing from you on future blogs. Reach out anytime.
