ELMNT FM’s Sara Kae on How to Stay Healthy During a Pandemic

During this COVID-19 pandemic, like most people, I am spending most of my time at home.  Being an extrovert who enjoys the hustle and bustle of Toronto, I was at first nervous about spending so much time indoors, however I have found that I am adapting to this new lifestyle better than expected.

I have discovered that setting goals for myself is helpful during this time.

Whether it’s as simple as,  “I am going to clean my cupboards today,” or “I am going to read two chapters of my book,” it really helps me stay motivated while other options of what we can do seem to keep diminishing.

Another helpful change that keeps me in a positive mindset is limiting myself to the amount of media exposure I get each day.

Obsessively scrolling for hours on end does not provide information that I already didn’t know. Also, I always check my sources to avoid feeling panicked by reading so-called “fake news.”

Finally, working out has contributed to a clearer, more relaxed self.

I have always been an active person, but I wasn’t dedicating any time for exercise, simply because I didn’t have time for it.  Now I am working out six days a week focusing on core, arm, and leg strength, and running 1-5 K a day depending on how I am feeling (everyday is different and I decide how much I want and can run that day). And bonus, my new found commitment is rubbing off on my family members, giving them the incentive to start working out.
YouTube videos have kept me inspired when working out can be feel a bit boring or routine. Videos give the illusion that there is a personal trainer right in your living room telling you  “you’re doing great,” and to “keep going,” when you feel like giving up.
There are a few videos I liked to use that are equipment free and beginner based. Remember to take it at whatever pace you are capable of and go from there! Any progress is success! Below I have included some videos that got me started:

Everyone can cope with the pandemic however they choose.  Do not feel pressure to conform to whatever schedule another person is following because every person is different – find what works for you and roll with it!
