Play dough is a hit at every age — and super easy to make at home!
Different folks have different favourite recipes, and you might tweak the below to find your signature approach. Choose which works best for you and store your dough in a covered container or ziploc when you’re not playing with it.
Whichever recipe you choose, you’re on the road to fun!
2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)
Mix all of the ingredients together, and stir over low heat. The dough will thicken. When it starts to pull away from the sides, and the dough is dry and resembles, well, play dough, remove from heat and allow to cool. If the dough is sticky, you just need to cook it longer!
1/2 cup flour
2 tbsp table salt
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp vegetable oil
Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Combine the water and oil add slowly to the dry ingredients. Mix until desired consistency.
EVEN EASIER NO COOK
2 parts cornstarch
1 part hand cream
This is my favourite because it’s a chance to use up hand creams and body lotions I don’t like! Truly, it makes GREAT playdough — and your hands will be so soft after.
All of the above can be coloured with food colouring or kool-aid powder. You can also add a few drops of essential oils for a scented dough. Add colour or scents to the water/liquid before mixing it with the dry ingredients.
